We are proud to see the SmartPlanter featured by NRK and Glommen Mjøsen Skog — both as a promising tool for future forest establishment and as an example of how research, innovation and practical forestry can work together.
Developed through SmartForest at NIBIO, driven by Csongor Horvath, the SmartPlanter makes it possible to register the exact GPS position of each planted seedling. For forest owners, this can open new opportunities for documenting planting work, following up investments in the forest, and making more informed decisions over time.
After a season of testing, Glommen Mjøsen Skog highlights several important advantages of the technology:
✅ better documentation of where plants are placed
✅ improved overview of planting density and species choice
✅ stronger quality control of planting work
✅ more precise follow-up of young forest stands
✅ better support for establishing mixed and climate-adapted forests
✅ a stronger foundation for future forest management decisions
With around 17 million seedlings planted annually by Glommen Mjøsen Skog, even small improvements in documentation, precision and follow-up can have a major impact.
Although the SmartPlanter is not yet a commercial product, the interest from forest owner organisations shows the potential of digital tools to make forestry more precise, efficient and knowledge-based.
